Mahanta, who had reportedly been facing significant business losses, is suspected to have died by suicide. According to his son, Mahanta had been under considerable stress due to his failing business and had exhibited unusual behaviour and also wanted to stay in Muzaffarpur.
Speaking to the media, Muzaffarpur City SP Vikram Sihag said, "The dead body of a businessman from Guwahati was found submerged in water from Rajwada in the Mushari police station area. When the police talked to his son, he said he was suffering from depression due to the loss of money. Prima facie, the case appears to be a suicide. However, the police team is investigating the entire matter."
However, his son Rohan Mahanta alleged the case to be a murder and said that this incident took place on November 20 around 5:15 AM in the morning when his father went out of the hotel named Hotel Atithi Residential, Imlichatti Road, Brahmpura, Muzzafarpur, Bihar where he was staying, for his usual morning walk routine. Since, then he could not contact him till 5:40 PM. Leading to which he then got worried and called the hotel staff and came to know that he had already gotten into the room and informed that the phone had been left behind on charge and the belongings were as it was. The CCTV footage showed that his father left the hotel at 10:00 AM and on asking the hotel authorities they changed their words and stated the timings to be 6:00 AM later. This led the victim's son to file a missing report at the Brahmpura Police Station through an acquaintance where they refused to file the FIR initially.
Later a missing report was filed at the Dispur police station and they asked to file a Zero FIR that they would send directly to the concerned police station which was in Brahmpura. And then, within an hour they sent a picture of the dead body in the river in a boat under mysterious conditions.
The region witnessed a series of disturbing incidents as five bodies including Mahanta were recovered under mysterious circumstances from various locations in Muzaffarpur over the past two days.
