GUWAHATI: In a bid to promote environmental sustainability and usher in green initiatives, the Assam government has unveiled key allocations and projects in its latest budget announcement.
It was revealed that all new buildings, both private and public, constructed in the state will be mandated to install rooftop solar facilities. To enforce this directive, the government intends to introduce new legislation during the current year.
Looking ahead to the fiscal year 2024-25, the government plans to introduce an additional 100 Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the Guwahati metropolitan area. This move aligns with the goal of achieving 100% green and fossil-fuel-free public transportation in the city, contributing to cleaner air and reduced carbon emissions.
The state is set to embark on another tree plantation drive, aiming to plant 3 crore saplings. To support this endeavor, an amount of ₹40 crore has been allocated.
Additionally, significant progress is expected in the completion of the Lower Kopili Hydro Electric Project, boasting a capacity of 120 MW. The project is slated for completion by the year's end, promising to bolster the state's renewable energy portfolio.
Furthermore, in a step towards reducing carbon footprint, a proposal to conduct energy audits of government establishments has been put forward. A budgetary allocation of ₹10 crore has been earmarked for this purpose.
