GUWAHATI: The State-wide Assam bandh called by the AASU has crippled life in the region after the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was cleared by the Cabinet on Monday and is scheduled to be tabled for discussion on Tuesday.
The entire Northeast has come together to oppose the CAB and are supporting the Assam bandh. Speaking to G Plus, AASU Advisor, Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “The reports we have received from other States is that the bandh is successful. It is a complete state wide and regional bandh. Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh have all observed the bandh.”
According to All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) General Secretary, Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, this is the first time in ten years that AASU has called for a bandh. “We don’t mean create inconvenience for anyone through bandhs. But the situation is so grave that we have been left with no other alternative,” he told The
Indian Express.
This is also the first time since independence that the entire Northeast region will observe a unified bandh. The North East Students’ Union (NESO) — the umbrella student body representing all the states — has also called for the bandh across seven northeastern states, which is being supported by the AGP, the Congress and 30 other ethnic organizations from Assam.
