Assam Attempts To Set Nine World Records With Amrit Brikshya Andolan

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has rallied public support to go on an ambitious mission to set nine world records while enhancing the state's green cover with saplings, primarily of commercial tree species.

This endeavour, known as the "Amrit Brikshya Andolan," witnessed the active participation of thousands of individuals across the state, all dedicated to the formidable goal of planting one crore saplings.

On the concluding day of the nine-day campaign, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasised the importance of ensuring that a minimum of 80% of these saplings survive, contributing to the realisation of the dream of achieving net-zero carbon emissions, a vision championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Chief Minister Sarma also declared the government's intention to surpass its own records by planting eight crore saplings in 2024 and an additional 10 crore saplings in 2025.

He further emphasised the significance of focusing on commercially viable tree species, recognizing that this approach would not only bolster the local economy but also sustain the broader green movement in the region.

The Amrit Brikshya Andolan featured an array of world record attempts, including the largest spiral of saplings, the largest distribution of seedlings in a single day at one venue, the most trees planted by a team within 24 hours, the most trees planted within an hour, the largest planted tree mosaic, the most trees planted by a team of 100 within an hour, and the largest nature conservation lesson delivered online.
