GUWAHATI: The Assam government introduced a policy providing one-time financial compensation to the next of kin (NOK) of prisoners who die under unnatural circumstances.

This decision was taken at a state cabinet meeting held on Saturday, December 6.
Compensation amounts vary based on the cause of death, with ₹2 lakh for deaths resulting from quarrels among prisoners and up to ₹4 lakh for negligence by prison staff or medical officers.

Furthermore, cases of torture or suicide will attract compensations of ₹3 lakh.
The initiative aims to support grieving families while addressing issues of accountability within the prison system.
