Assam: 32 Percent Married Women Experienced Spousal Violence in 2019-20

GUWAHATI: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare recently released details of the first phase of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 (2019-20) for 22 states and five union territories.


As per the survey report, a whopping 32 percent married women (between age 18 to 49 yrs)  in Assam have reportedly experienced spousal violence, a 7.5 percent rise in 3 years. 


2.3 percent women sadly reported physical violence during pregnancy.


Also, 8 percent females (between age 18 to 29 years) in the state claimed to have experienced sexual violence by 18 years of age. Further, it was found that women of the rural areas are more prone to violence. 


The National Family Health Survey also found that the adolescent fertility rate for women between 15 to 19 years stands at 61 percent in Assam. While 64 percent are girls from the rural areas, 41 percent are from urban areas.
