GUWAHATI: Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in Guwahati has welcomed a lion and two tiger cubs that were born a week apart in June amid the nationwide lockdown restrictions, which were enforced from March 25 to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) outbreak.

“The male lion cub was born on June 10 and the two tiger cubs, a male and a female, were born a week later on June 18,” said Tejas Mariswamy, divisional forest officer (DFO), Assam State Zoo speaking to G Plus.
However, the news of their birth has only been made public now after the new-borns were found to be in good spirits.
The lion cub has been named Simba after the character in the Walt Disney musical drama, The Lion King. While the male tiger has been named Sultan, the zoo authorities are yet to decide a name for the female tiger.

Sharing the good news, minister Parimal Suklabaidya wrote on Twitter, "Glad to share with you all that our lioness and tigress have given birth to one lion cub and two tiger cubs at @assamzoo during the lockdown period... My heartiest congratulations."
