All Assam Transgender Association Opposes Assamese Film on Transgenders

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Transgender Association (AATA) opposed the upcoming Assamese film on transgenders-- Outcast.

The members of the association said that the movie’s poster presents the transgender community in a bad light. They informed that a major issue was with the name of the film.

“Today transgenders are finding employment in different fields and are also being accepted by the community. So we can’t call them as outcasts or untouchables,” said members of the AATA.

Swati Bidhan Barua, first transgender judge of Assam and founder of All Assam Transgender Association also mentioned that the people involved with the movie and its promoters are wrongly soliciting donations from people asking them to help the community.

“Our organisation has never asked for money from the people of Assam and whatever we do is a joint effort of the members,” said Baruah.

She added that the poster of the film is also problematic as it portrays a gay man as a transgender which can be damaging to the community.

“If transgenders aren’t portrayed sensitively, it can have a lasting damaging impact for the entire community,” said Baruah.
