GUWAHATI: The Assam Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has directed the District Magistrate of Kamrup (M) and the Commissioner of Police, Guwahati City, to submit detailed reports with supporting documents regarding the death of Congress worker Advocate Mridul Islam during the "Raj Bhavan Chalo" protest on Wednesday, December 18. The commission has scheduled a review of the case on February 28, 2025, according to reports.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) had earlier petitioned the AHRC, seeking an investigation into Islam's death.
The protest, organised by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), drew thousands of supporters as part of a nationwide demonstration against several issues, including the implementation of smart meters, alleged corruption linked to the Adani Group, the ongoing Manipur crisis, and the proposed "One Nation, One Election" Bill.
Key Congress leaders, such as APCC President Bhupen Borah, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Working President Jakir Hussain Sikdar, and senior leader Ripun Bora, actively participated in the protest. Tear gas was used to disperse the crowd, reportedly affecting many protesters, including these leaders.
