GUWAHATI: Ahead of Eid-al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, the Assam Government has asked the District Administrations and the State Police to check illegal butchering of cows, camels and other animals across the State.
In a notice, the Government has directed District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police to initiate legal action against anyone found violating the rules laid down by the Union Government for transportation and slaughtering of animals, the notice said.
The State Government received a letter from the Secretary, Animal Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India regarding stopping of illegal killing, sacrifice of Cows, Calves, Camels and other animals and taking action against the offenders for violation of Transport of Animals Rules on the occasion of Bakrid.
The Home Department of the State has requested the Police and Administration heads of all districts to look into the matter and take necessary action within their jurisdictional areas accordingly.
