GUWAHATI: The ACS Officers' Association has staged a statewide protest against the alleged physical assault of an on-duty Magistrate by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satgaon Police Station in Guwahati recently.

Bibhash Medhi, Election Officer of South Salmara district was allegedly physically assaulted by OC Pranjit Lahkar of Satgaon Police Station without any rhyme or reason while filing a complaint on March 7.

General Secretary of the Association, Udayaditaya Gogoi told G Plus that all officers of the  Assam Administration Service have been wearing black badges as a mark of protest against the incident. Additionally, protests were also staged with placards by the officers in Koliabor, Dhubri and Udalguri today.

The ACS Officers’ Association has received memorandums from all its district wings which will be forwarded to the Chief Minister soon.

“We are deeply saddened and shocked by this barbaric action of the OC and we unequivocally condemn this action,” read the memorandum.

“When a respectable person of the society like an Executive Magistrate can become the victim of the audacity of such a police person, then how can we expect safety and security of the general public in the hands of such police officials?... When the said OC has the audacity to manhandle a senior civil servant, then the plight of a common man while dealing with such an officer at a PS can very well be imagined, not to mention the situation of the PS at night,” it further stated.

Gogoi said that memorandum condemning the incident and seeking immediate exemplary action against the OC has been forwarded to the association by all its district wings.

“We have requested to meet the Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma and submit the memorandum soon. But the CM has himself initiated an investigation and suspended the OC of Satgaon, Pranjit Lahkar, on March 9,” Gogoi further said.
