Assam Police Arrested 690 Traffickers In 2024, 900 Victims Rescued

 

GUWAHATI: Assam Police registered over 450 cases related to human trafficking in 2024, leading to the arrest of more than 690 traffickers, and the rescue of around 900 victims.

The figures were revealed by Finance Minister Ajanta Neog while presenting the state budget for 2025-26 at the assembly session on Monday, March 10.

The crackdown on organised crime extended beyond human trafficking, with authorities also seizing 174 kg of heroin and over 21,000 kg of ganja in 2024. These operations have delivered a blow to illegal drug networks operating across the state.

According to the provided statistics, women’s safety initiatives have also contributed to Assam’s improved ranking in crimes against women. Data derived from the Crime in India report by the state government has seen Assam moved from 7th position in 2021 to 14th position in 2023.

Additionally, the state government has taken steps to curb child marriage. Secretaries of Gaon Panchayats in general areas and Lot Mandals of Circle Offices in Sixth Schedule areas have been designated as Child Marriage Prohibition Officers (CMPOs) to strengthen enforcement.
