Abducted Toddler Recovered, Child Trafficking Network Uncovered In Guwahati

GUWAHATI: In a coordinated operation, the Dispur Police rescued an abducted 18-month-old girl from the clutches of a child trafficking network operating across Assam and Hyderabad on February 11.

The child, daughter of Ashok Shah, was abducted from Khanapara Guwahati on February 11, 2024.

Ashok Shah, filed a complaint at the Dispur Police Station about the abduction at around 3:20 PM on the same day. He provided crucial information about a suspect who frequented his tea stall, eventually leading the police to Biswajit Das, also known as Sameer Dey, and his wife Sabita Dey.

Investigation revealed a chilling plot orchestrated by Biswajit Das, who, burdened by debt, conspired with his wife and accomplices to abduct the child for a handsome sum promised by a child trafficking agent in Hyderabad.

Niki Boro, a vulnerable and unwitting accomplice, unknowingly facilitated the abduction according to the instructions of Biswajit Das.

Further interrogation and intelligence operations led the police to Jelimon Begum, who confessed to her role in the trafficking network. Begum, along with the accused couple, collaborated in transporting the abducted child to Hyderabad for adoption by childless couples, as part of a larger child trafficking scheme.

The accused, identified as Biswajit Das, Sabita Dey, and Jelimon Begum, have been apprehended and are currently in police custody. Their addresses span across Assam, indicating the widespread nature of the trafficking network. Meanwhile their present addresses are in Guwahati.

Addressing the media, Commissioner of Police, Diganta Barah said, "This was an extremely shocking incident and a new form of crime. We have acquired more leads through investigation, further details will be provided after a thorough search."
