GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) said that the government must apologise to the people of Assam by convening a special session of the State Legislative Assembly for misinterpreting the Assam Accord on the floor of the House.
In an interview to a news daily, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said that State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in the State Assembly held on Monday, misinterpreted the cut-off date of the Assam Accord saying that there was a wrong notion regarding 1971 as the cut-off date.
“Clause 5, in its sub-sections 5.1 to 5.9, has elaborately dealt with the status of the foreigners and the base year for their detection and deletion. It says that the foreigners who came to Assam after 1.1.1966 (inclusive) and up to March 24, 1971 shall be detected in accordance with the Foreigners Act 1946 and the Foreigners (Tribunal) order 1964. Again, the foreigners who came to Assam on or after March 25, 1971 shall continue to be detected, deleted and expelled in accordance with law,” Bhattacharya said.
Bhattacharya now wants the State Chief Minister to apologise to the people of Assam for the ‘wilful misinterpretation of the historic Accord in the sanctified confines of the House.’
AASU also wants PM Narendra Modi to declare a time-bound action plan for implementation of all the clauses of the Assam Record and not create any kind of confusion among the people of the state on CAA.
