GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Guwahati to initiate the construction work of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Changsari by taking part in a ‘Bhumi Pujan’, which was supposed to be an auspicious event. However, until now, his visit has been marked by protests from different organisations.
All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) members, who were barricaded by security persons inside their Guwahati office were seen waving black flags as the PM’s convoy passed from the airport towards Raj Bhavan.
"The BJP is anti-Assamese and this Bill poses a serious threat to the indigenous people. AASU will organise protests, demonstrations and effigy burning across the state tomorrow,” said Samujjal Bhattacharya, AASU advisor.
As a mark of protest, AASU will burn copies of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill tomorrow. They are also planning to burn effigies of the Prime Minister even though Section 144 has been imposed in the city.
Meanwhile, members from Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) took out a torchlight protest a few metres away from the route of the prime minister's convoy. They were restricted by the police and the security forces.
Both organisations are protesting Modi’s visit as they are firmly against the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Rajya Sabha.
