7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Jolts Guwahati And Rest Of Assam

 

GUWAHATI: An earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck Tibet early this morning, shaking up Guwahati and the rest of Assam besides several other states across India.

According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 6:35 AM, with its epicenter located in Xizang, Tibet. The quake caused damage near the epicenter, claiming at least nine fatalities.

The tremors were strongly felt in Bihar, Delhi-NCR, Assam, and West Bengal, where residents reported shaking buildings.

Further, as per NCS date, two aftershocks followed. A second earthquake, measuring 4.7 in magnitude, struck at 7:02 AM at a depth of 10 km, while a third, with a magnitude of 4.9, hit at 7:07 AM at a depth of 30 km.

Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the damage, and rescue operations are underway in the affected areas near the epicenter.
