GUWAHATI: The Assam government will be distributing land pattas to 54,000 indigenous families of the state on 5th October.
The decision was announced by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal during a review meeting of the State Revenue Department on 14th September. Also present in the meeting were Industry & Commerce Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta, MoS (I), Revenue Jogen Mohan, and Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar Krishna.
The distribution is a part of the Land Policy of 2019, that was formulated as per the recommendation of the Hari Shankar Brahma Committee on Protection of Land Rights of Indigenous People, which ensured one lakh land pattas for the indigenous people of Assam.
The government has already allotted 46,000 pattas till date. The remaining 54,000 will be handed over on 5th October.
The government of Assam has also decided to ceremonially give out land pattas to the tea planters at Jorhat and formulate a policy to rehabilitate those people who were rendered homeless by flood and erosion.
