GUWAHATI: The Assam Forest Department authorities during an operation at Dibrugarh Airport seized 500 Channa Barca fishes on December 21.
This rare and valuable species, with an estimated international market value of ₹4.5 crore, marks one of the largest exotic fish seizures in recent times.
The anti-smuggling operation, executed by the Assam Forest Department, was aimed at curbing the illicit trade of endangered and exotic species. Channa Barca, also known as the Barca Snakehead, is a rare fish species sought after in the international aquarium trade due to its unique characteristics and distinctive appearance.
The confiscated consignment, believed to be destined for the international market, has been intercepted by the Assam Forest Department.
Assam Chief Minister took to X to put out, “In a successful anti-smuggling operation carried out by @assamforest- 500 Channa Barca fishes have been seized at Dibrugarh Airport. These rare species of fish are valued at ₹4.5 crore in the international market & is one of the biggest exotic fish seizures in recent times.”
