GUWAHATI: The government has decided to construct 44 ‘strategic’ roads along the Indo-China border, according to an annual report prepared and released by the authorities of the Central Public Works Department (CWPD) earlier this month.

The roads will be constructed along five states including Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh and Arunachal Pradesh bordering the Indo-China border.

The government has asked the agency to make these “strategically important” roads along the border so that it aids in the quick mobilisation of troops in case of a conflict. The report mentioned that these roads will be constructed along the border for an approximate cost of INR 21,000 crore.

The government of India is also looking to construct 2100 kms of axial and lateral roads along Punjab and Rajasthan, abutting Pakistan, another CWPD report stated.

The report of these constructions have come around when China is increasingly looking into projects along the Indian border.
