GUWAHATI: Amid the rising cases of coronavirus cases in the state, the perennial trouble has hit Assam. The state witnessed its first wave of floods this year affecting over 30,000 people in 5 districts of Assam.
An approximate 127 villages have been affected in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Darrang and Goalpara districts of Assam. Close to 579 hectares of crop land is already under flood water due to the after effects of the cyclone Amphan.
The state government, fearing threats from the flood season, has suggested that people stranded outside return home before 10th June so that the state can focus on flood relief due to the approaching monsoons.

Of the 5 districts affected, Goalpara happens to be the worst affected with close to 23,000 people affected in approximately 90 villages. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has set up 33 relief camps in the district providing shelter to over 8,000 people so far.
On May 25, the Regional Meteorological Department had predicted lightning, thunderstorm and moderate spells of rainfall, likely to affect parts of Bongaigaon, Barpeta, Baksa, Nalbari, Kamrup and Kamrup (Metro) district.
For Guwahati, the Met Department also predicted a generally cloudy sky with moderate rain over the next 3 days with the possibility of rain and thunderstorms towards the end of this week.
