According to a report by Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (APMCC), in the last two years there have been 29,223 crimes against women in the state of Assam. This includes 3,009 rapes, 17,106 incidents of physical assault, and 9,108 cases of kidnapping.
Nine incidents of rape have culminated in the death of the victims, stated the report.
In the last fiscal year alone, till Jan 6th, Assam has witnessed 8,335 incidents of physical assault, 1,457 cases of rape and 4,314 cases of kidnapping.
It is to be noted that only 1,786 arrests have been made against over 3,000 cases of rape.
The report was also submitted by the members of APMCC to the Governor of Assam, Prof Jagdish Mukhi, and the members requested him to take strong actions against the culprits involved and implement strict rules to curb the rise in such crimes.
