Formed in 1949, the 119 Territorial Army has been a vital component of India’s defence forces. Initially established as part of the Territorial Army (TA) to supplement the regular Indian Army, the unit has evolved into a formidable force, contributing significantly to national security and welfare. The Platinum Jubilee celebration not only honours its military achievements but also its commitment to balancing military duties with civilian responsibilities.

The Territorial Army was established in 1949 as a voluntary force, allowing citizens to serve militarily while continuing their civilian careers.

The 119 Territorial Army was among the pioneering units formed during this period, reflecting the need for a versatile force capable of responding to conflicts, natural disasters, and other emergencies.

Over the decades, the 119 TA has integrated deeply into India’s defence structure, with its members—often professionals from various fields—demonstrating exemplary dedication to both their civilian roles and military duties.

Throughout its 75-year history, the 119 Territorial Army has played a crucial role in safeguarding India’s national security.

The unit has been involved in key military operations, supporting the regular army during wars and internal conflicts. Its adaptability has been a defining characteristic, with the 119 TA participating in counterinsurgency operations and providing logistical support during high-stakes missions.

The unit’s soldiers have consistently demonstrated bravery and discipline, particularly in challenging regions affected by insurgencies and border tensions.

In addition to its military contributions, the 119 TA has been at the forefront of disaster relief efforts and community outreach programs. The unit has responded swiftly to natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and cyclones, saving lives and bringing relief to affected communities.

The Assam Terriers have also engaged in social welfare initiatives, including health camps, blood donation drives, and educational programs, benefiting thousands of people and fostering strong ties between the military and civilian populations.

As the 119 Territorial Army celebrates this significant milestone, it reaffirms its commitment to its legacy of service, dedication, and professionalism. The unit’s role in national defence, disaster relief, and community service will continue to be vital as India faces new challenges.

The Platinum Jubilee is not just a commemoration of the past but a pledge to uphold the undying spirit of “Tagra Raho” and to continue serving the nation with honor and pride.

The 119 TA at Kenches Trace in Shillong stands as a symbol of resilience, unity, and the enduring spirit of the Indian armed forces.
