GUWAHATI: The Assam government is set to launch the first phase of its Smart Street Lighting Project on Wednesday, October 9. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the project at Nandi Mikir Primary School, Chachal, alongside Ashok Singhal, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, and Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania.
As part of the initiative to enhance safety and sustainability, over 11,000 energy-saving LED street lights will be inaugurated across the city, out of a total planned 20,667.
The project integrates a Centralised Control and Monitoring System (CCMS), enabling real-time monitoring and energy management, which will further help in reducing maintenance costs and optimising energy usage. The entire set-up comes at an estimated budget of ₹83.96 crore.
Currently, 10,000 lights have already been installed on 944 roads, offering enhanced visibility and safety. The street lights have also been equipped with a cloud-based management system, allowing remote control, automatic on/off, and dimming functions. Energy savings will be achieved through the process of automatic dimming after midnight.
Part of this initiative comes after the Government of India had launched the Street Lighting National Programme (SLNP) in 2015. The objectives laid out in the programme were focused on reducing the nation’s energy consumption by replacing traditional street lights with energy-efficient LED lighting systems.
