The CM had stepped down citing a perceived conflict of interest. In response, the Bar Association argued that his continued membership would not breach ethical boundaries and would instead strengthen institutional ties.

The Association also backed the CM’s plans to upgrade High Court infrastructure, acknowledging the proposed ₹1,000 crore investment. However, it offered alternatives, suggesting vertical and riverside expansion of the existing annexe to cut costs to ₹70 crore. The proposal includes redirecting the potential ₹900 crore saving to legal welfare.

It also pitched three welfare schemes: ₹10 crore for a stipend to junior advocates, ₹10 crore for a pension fund for senior lawyers, and ₹10 crore for a health insurance scheme for Bar members and dependants.

The Association said the CM’s continued association would represent unity and strength in Assam’s legal institutions.
