GUWAHATI: The Union Law Ministry on Wednesday, February 12, issued an official notification confirming judicial officer Yarenjungla Longkumer’s appointment as an additional judge of the Gauhati High Court. This development makes her the first woman from Nagaland to hold this position.

Longkumer's name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on January 4, 2024, alongside advocate Shamima Jahan for appointment to the Gauhati High Court. The Collegium, which included then Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna (now CJI) and B.R. Gavai, had reviewed inputs from the Gauhati High Court before deeming them suitable.
With a career spanning several judicial roles, Longkumer has served as a district and sessions judge in Peren and Kohima and as a judicial secretary in the Law & Justice Department of Nagaland.
Other notable appointments include that of judicial officer Chaitali Chatterjee Das for the Calcutta High Court and advocate Taj Ali Moulasab Nadaf for the Karnataka High Court. The appointments were made by the President of India after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, as per constitutional provisions.
The Guwahati High Court also has territorial jurisdiction over a number of states in the Northeast, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland.
