Why Biswanath Ghat Was Named India’s Best Tourism Village In 2023

GUWAHATI: In September 2023, Biswanath Ghat, a crucial location for monitoring rhino poaching along the Brahmaputra, was recognised as the Best Tourism Village in India by the Ministry of Tourism. The area is 240 km northeast of Guwahati and serves as a strategic point for forest protection forces.

Biswanath Ghat, with its speedboat docking point, plays a vital role in monitoring the Brahmaputra stretch, and nearby Umatumuni Island attracts tourists with its 27 medieval temples. The recognition of Biswanath Ghat as the best tourism village is anticipated to improve infrastructure and attract longer stays.

Biswanath Ghat is central to promoting rural and farm tourism, with locals undertaking projects to capitalize on hospitality ventures. The area is also home to organic farms and small tea growers, anticipating benefits from niche tourism.

The Biswanath Division, with 75%-90% of its area covered by water, is exploring sustainable tourism options, focusing on rural and farm tourism. Despite the 'best tourism village' recognition, infrastructure in the area remains limited, and the focus is on diverting tourist traffic to ease pressure on frequently visited parts of Kaziranga.
