WATCH | Monkey Menace Hits Guwahati’s Kumarpara, After Leopard Incident

GUWAHATI: The Kumarpara locality in Guwahati has recently been facing an increasing monkey menace, with a surge in visits from monkey troops, causing distress among residents. A viral video circulating on social media shows a troop of monkeys hanging from wires and trees.

Locals report that while only 1-2 monkeys used to visit the area previously, the number has risen in recent months. Some residents claim the monkeys have even caused damage to water pipes, leading to leakage issues.

Talking to GPlus, a local said,  "This has increased majorly in the last 3-4 months. Earlier, 1-2 used to come, now they come in troops. We have to keep our windows and doors closed at all times, or else, monkeys enter the house and even take away food and vegetables."

The surge in monkey activity is attributed to environmental factors, with many residents believing that deforestation and human encroachment are pushing the animals into the city.

This incident comes just days after a leopard was spotted in an apartment in Kumarpara. The leopard was rescued after hours of searching by forest officials.

Speaking to GPlus, an official from Assam Forest Department said, "As development and human encroachment increase, animals are forced to leave their natural habitats. Their homes are no longer safe, so they end up venturing out into human settlements."

In addition to the monkey menace, residents are also dealing with a rise in the number of rodents in the area, with large rats further complicating daily life.
