As garlic prices have soared, some vendors have taken advantage of the situation, selling counterfeit garlic to unsuspecting customers. According to reports, the scam was uncovered when the wife of Subhash Patil, a retired police officer living in Bajoria Nagar, Akola, discovered she had been deceived by a street vendor selling the artificial product.
Patil's wife had bought 250 gram of garlic from a vendor outside her home, but when she tried to peel it, the cloves wouldn't separate. Upon closer examination, it was revealed that the garlic was actually made of cement, coated in white to mimic the appearance of real garlic.
Subhash Patil expressed concern over the incident, noting that the fake garlic was being sold as genuine, potentially endangering public health.
The counterfeit garlic is reportedly being mixed with real garlic in the district, making it difficult for consumers to tell the difference.
This discovery comes just a week after the Madhya Pradesh High Court ruled that garlic is a vegetable, allowing it to be sold in both vegetable and spice markets.
