Vishnu idol looted from Sidheswar Devalaya found

GUWAHATI: Assam police recovered one of the two main idols stolen from the historic Sidheswar Devalaya, located at Sualkuchi.

Earlier, the police had picked up one Phatik Kalita in connection to the theft. Another member of the gang, Bapuram Das, was nabbed on 9 December.

Upon interrogation, it was revealed that the accused had hidden the idol somewhere on the banks of the Brahmaputra. On Monday, a search operation was carried out at an area indicated by the culprits and the Vishnu idol was recovered from a jungle near a sluice gate in the area.

The accused Bapuram Das, a weaver, is a relative of Phatik Kalita, who was arrested on 8 December.
