Vegetable Prices in Guwahati Shoot Up due to Assam Floods

GUWAHATI: With the flood situation in Assam turning critical affecting more than 14 lakh people in 25 districts, the prices of vegetables have sky-rocketed.

According to reports, taking advantage of the floods, the vegetable traders have hiked the prices of vegetables putting consumers in a fix over what is truly affordable for them.

The vegetables in Guwahati mainly come from Dalgaon, Kharupetia in Mangaldoi and Meghalaya. 

Reportedly, the vegetables which sold at Rs. 15 per kilo at wholesale prices are now being retailed at Rs. 40 a kilo  while the vegetables which sold at Rs. 25 at wholesale rates are now being sold at Rs. 50 a kilo at retail prices. The vegetables which sold at Rs. 50 at wholesale rates are selling at Rs. 100-120 at retail price.

The traders also said that prices are expected to rise further if the weather and flood situation remains the same.
