GUWAHATI: In a statement issued by the White House on Tuesday, February 26, the Trump administration described India’s airstrike in the Balakot region as “counter-terrorism actions” and emphasized Washington’s close security partnership with India and their shared goal of keeping peace and security in the region.

The statement has asked Pakistan to de-escalate current tensions by avoiding any military action and to take meaningful action against terrorist groups that have been operating in their country.

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo spoke to both India and Pakistan’s external affairs ministers, Sushma Swaraj and Shah Mehmood Qureshi and encouraged both nations to “exercise restraint and avoid escalation at any cost and to prioritise direct communication and avoid further military activity.”
