US President Trump Announces 26% Reciprocal Tariff On India In New Trade Policy

GUWAHATI: US President Donald Trump has announced new reciprocal tariffs on India, China, the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Japan. He stated that these tariffs are intended to counter high duties imposed by these nations on American goods. India will face a 26 per cent tariff, China 34 per cent, the European Union 20 per cent, the UK 10 per cent, and Japan 24 per cent.

Trump criticised New Delhi's trade policies, calling them "very tough." He cited a recent conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasising that while Modi is a "great friend," India has not been "treating us right." He justified the 26 per cent tariff by stating that India charges the US 52 per cent on certain imports.

In addition to these country-specific tariffs, the White House confirmed a baseline 10 per cent import duty on all products entering the US. However, no industry-specific details were disclosed regarding the tariff application.

The White House confirmed that the tariffs would go into effect immediately.
