According to media reports, his daughter Mercedes Kilmer confirmed that he passed away due to pneumonia. She also mentioned that he was previously diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014, though he later recovered.
Kilmer was one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men in the 1990s, celebrated for his compelling performances and charismatic screen presence. However, despite his early success, his career eventually declined due to a series of poor role choices, on-set conflicts, and disappointing box office performances. Over time, he gained a reputation for being intense and demanding, with some labelling him a difficult artist to work with.
Kilmer’s Hollywood journey began with his 1984 film debut in the spy comedy Top Secret!, followed by a lead role in Real Genius (1985). His breakthrough came in 1986 when he starred alongside Tom Cruise in the blockbuster Top Gun, playing the cool and confident naval aviator Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Decades later, he reprised the iconic role in Top Gun: Maverick (2022), reuniting with Cruise in a moving and critically acclaimed performance.
