GUWAHATI: A closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council, held on Monday, May 5 at Pakistan’s request, concluded without any resolution, statement, or official outcome. The session, convened amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, produced no consensus or direction from the Council.

The meeting took place hours after UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the regional situation had reached its most volatile state in years. Despite this, Security Council members did not issue a joint statement or any formal response following the discussion.

The session was not a formal UNSC meeting and therefore did not require an official record or follow-up. As Council president for May, Greece facilitated the session but made no public remarks on its contents.

According to reports, no significant agreement was reached during the meeting. The absence of a statement signals continued divisions among Council members on how to address the India-Pakistan dispute, particularly over Kashmir and cross-border militancy.

Pakistan had called for the meeting citing India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and alleged military escalation in Kashmir. Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN raised accusations against India, calling the treaty suspension an “act of aggression” and accusing New Delhi of provocation.

India has rejected the claims, asserting that Pakistan used the meeting to deflect attention from the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians. Indian officials described Pakistan’s intervention at the UN as a continued misuse of international forums to promote false narratives.
