Microsoft To Shut Down Skype From May 5

 

GUWAHATI: Microsoft is officially moving on from Skype with effect from May 5, 2025. The decision came as part of Microsoft's broader strategy to streamline its communication tools and merge all its users into Microsoft Teams.

Skype, launched in 2003 by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, became one of the most household names for video calling, but eventually, in the later years, lost its edge with the emergence of other platforms like Teams, which are more modern and equipped with the Microsoft atmosphere. 

Oldschool users of the 21-year-old platform shared their nostalgia through 'X', some are as follows:- 
"Skype wasn’t just a tool—it was a lifeline in the early days of my web development journey. It helped me connect with clients across the globe, collaborate with."

"Their shutting down Skype is so sad. Everything from my childhood is leaving."

Although the process to switch to Teams is simple, customers just have to log in with their Skype credentials, and their contacts and messages will be automatically synced.

However, the new purchases of Skype Credit and plans can continue using their services until their billing cycle ends their Skype Numbers will remain active until expiry and can be ported to other carriers.
