Speaking to a TV news channel, he said that commuters would get relief “soon”, as a study on the policy has been completed. However, he did not specify whether tolls would be reduced or abolished.
Addressing social media criticism, Gadkari acknowledged that memes about toll taxes frequently circulate. “People are a little angry about the toll, but that will go away in a few days,” he stated.
Earlier, reports emerged that the government is planning to introduce annual and lifetime toll passes for highway users. Regular commuters could soon have the option to purchase a one-year toll pass for ₹3,000 or a 15-year lifetime pass for ₹30,000, embedded directly in their FASTags.
This development comes days after the Centre provided tax relief to the middle class, when Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the tax reforms during the 2025 Budget session.
