GUWAHATI: The United Nations Security Council will hold closed consultations on Monday, May 4, to address rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The session, scheduled by Greece in its capacity as Council President for May, was convened at Pakistan’s request.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office confirmed the move on Sunday, stating it would brief Council members on regional developments, including India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty. Islamabad called the suspension a provocative act in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack, for which it has denied responsibility and demanded a neutral investigation.
Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said the evolving situation posed a threat to regional and international peace and justified Council attention.
The Security Council includes five permanent members—China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US—and ten non-permanent members. Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris of Greece, who holds the Council presidency this month, remarked that while the Council condemns terrorism in all forms, it is also concerned about the growing tension in South Asia.
India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty after accusing Pakistan of harbouring terror networks linked to the Pahalgam incident. The decision was part of a broader diplomatic and security response that included expelling Pakistani military attachés, closing the Attari land-transit post, and warning UN members against what it described as Pakistan's misuse of international platforms for propaganda.
In retaliation, Pakistan shut its airspace to Indian carriers and suspended trade with India, including transit through third countries. It also dismissed India’s action on the Indus Waters Treaty as illegal, calling any attempt to cut water flow an “act of war.”
However, India has approached eight non-permanent members of the Council to counter Pakistan’s narrative ahead of the consultations.
