GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh on Monday, May 5, as the Centre continues high-level consultations to finalise its response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack.

According to sources, the meeting took place a day after the prime minister held discussions with Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, completing a series of interactions with the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. These back-to-back meetings have signalled the government’s ongoing review of military and strategic options.
The developments come twelve days after the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam, where 25 tourists and a local pony ride operator were killed. Modi had earlier stated that those responsible for the attack would face consequences “beyond imagination,” fuelling expectations of a firm response from New Delhi.
As Pakistan has been suspected to have had a role in the attack, India has already undertaken several diplomatic measures, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty and halting visa services for Pakistani nationals. Diplomatic staff at Pakistan’s missions in India have also been reduced.
In response, Islamabad has warned that stopping the water flow would be treated as an act of war and has threatened to withdraw from all bilateral agreements, including the Simla Agreement.
