Umananda's Last Golden Langur Dies

GUWAHATI: The last surviving golden langur of Umananda island of Assam, died on February 22.

According to reports, golden langurs have been inhabiting the Umananda island for several years, however, with the passage of time their population kept decreasing.

Although the exact reason for the death of the golden langur is yet to be ascertained, but conservationists believe prolonged loneliness and depression may have been prime reasons for the primate’s death.

Golden langurs are critically-endangered species which is endemic to Bhutan and some parts of western Assam.
