Ugratara Idol Robbery: Guwahati Police still clueless

GUWAHATI: In the wake of the theft of the astadhatu idol of Goddess Tara from the historic Ugratara temple the Crime Branch of the Assam Police has managed to detain several suspects.

However, no concrete evidence has been established on the whereabouts of the stolen items which are yet to be traced.

Meanwhile, the six accused in the case, including a woman, were produced at a court which remanded them to ten days police custody. Five of the accused - Rohit Basfor, Raju Basfor, Honey Singh, Babu, and Tinku Hazarika - are drug addicts and have past criminal records. They operate in the Paltan Bazar, Maligaon, Santipur areas.

Instead in a surprising move, the officer-in-charge of Latasil police station inspector Sunil Kalita was transferred and Upen Kalita from CID has replaced him.

Officials investigating the case said that the accused have confessed to the crime and have sealed a depot of scrap goods located at Chabipul under Bharalumukh police station.

With many versions coming up from the police administration, a highly-placed source with the officials investigating the robbery states that the accused claimed to have sold the idol at the said depot.

It is learned that the investigation area has widened and operations are being conducted in neighbouring districts of Barpeta and Goalpara as well.
