GUWAHATI: The South Sarania traffic point in Guwahati witnesses a huge traffic jam due to the influx of two-wheelers waiting on the wrong side of the road divider.

This issue is mainly due to the long waiting times of the traffic light at the Ulubari Flyover for the vehicles coming in from South Sarania. This causes the two-wheelers to pile up and line on the other side of the divider so as to get a chance at crossing the signal early. This causes a huge mayhem in that area especially during peak hours such as school and office times. This also in-turn causes issues for the oncoming traffic, reducing the space for them to pass and hence contributing to the jam.
The overall width of the road is another contributing factor to the gridlocks in that area. Lawless people aid to this by their behaviour of piling up on the wrong side of the road while waiting for the signal to turn green.
Talking to GPlus, S.S Gopal, a commuter said, “What else can we do Sir? The situation is such that we will not be able to pass if we wait in a queue properly. And everyone has work to attend to!”
Also, speaking to GPlus, a traffic official from Paltan Bazar police station said, “We have and are planning on imposing fines for such violators. If we generally notice such behaviour, we point out and fine them. Also, the barricades have been placed in between the roads to deter such behaviour, but you know how people are. A majority of them do not comply. Awareness and civic sense is also the need of the hour.”
Hence, involving stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, improved infrastructure planning, along with a sense of responsibility among commuters will ensure smoother traffic flow in the area.
