GUWAHATI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court in Guwahati on Wednesday, January 22, sentenced two individuals in connection with the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) case. The case pertains to a terror module linked to the proscribed international terror group Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).

The accused, both from Barpeta district in Assam, were sentenced under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act [UA (P) Act] in case RC-02/2022/NIA/GUW.
Mamunur Rashid received a sentence of three years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and a fine of ₹1,000. In default of payment, he will serve an additional one month of simple imprisonment under Section 19 of the UA (P) Act. He was also sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for the period already served (2 years, 10 months, and 13 days) under Sections 20, 38, and 39 of the UA (P) Act, and an additional three months of simple imprisonment under Section 120(B) IPC.
Mukibul Hussain, also known as Makibul Hussain, was sentenced to six months of simple imprisonment and a fine of ₹500. In default of payment, he will serve 14 days of simple imprisonment under Section 120(B) IPC. Like Rashid, Hussain was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for the period already served (2 years, 8 months, and 13 days) under Sections 20, 38, and 39 of the UA (P) Act.
The case, registered in March 2022, investigated an ABT module led by Bangladeshi national Saiful Islam, also known as Haroon Rashid. The module operated in Assam's Barpeta district and was linked to AQIS.
The NIA had filed a chargesheet against eight accused in August 2022 and a supplementary chargesheet against two others in August 2023. The investigation and trial against other accused are ongoing.
