GUWAHATI: The central government, on Friday, January 17, appointed Justice Kardak Ete and Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita as permanent judges of the Gauhati High Court. The appointments were made in accordance with the powers conferred under Article 217(1) of the Constitution of India.

A notification issued by the centre stated, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (I) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint S/Shri Justices (i) Kardak Ete and (ii) Mridul Kumar Kalita, Additional Judges of the Gauhati High Court, to be Judges of that High Court with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.”

Justice Kardak Ete was previously elevated as an Additional Judge of the Gauhati High Court on March 13, 2023. A graduate of Campus Law Centre, Delhi University, he enrolled with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim in 1999. His career includes roles as Additional Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh in 2011, Senior Additional Advocate General in 2016, and Acting Advocate General in 2021. He was also designated as a Senior Advocate in 2014.
Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita, meanwhile, was elevated as an Additional Judge on April 20, 2023. He holds a B.Sc. degree from Arya Vidyapeeth College, Guwahati, and an LL.B and LL.M from Gauhati University. Enrolling as an Advocate in 1994, he practiced in district courts before joining the Assam Judicial Service on 10 May 2000. Justice Kalita also served as a lecturer at J.B. Law College, Guwahati, for two years.
