Assam’s Sualkuchi, famously known as the "Manchester of the East" for its silk-weaving industry, has been identified as one of the best tourism villages in the 'craft category' by the Ministry of Tourism.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, under whose legislative constituency Sualkuchi falls, took to X to celebrate the achievement. “I am happy to share that Vastra Nagri Sualkuchi has been selected as one of the Best Tourism Villages in the Craft category by @tourismgoi,” he posted.

Sualkuchi has a centuries-old tradition of silk weaving. Known for producing three types of silk—muga (the golden silk unique to Assam), pat (white or off-white silk), and eri (a warm, durable silk)—the town is a lively hub for artisans who have streamlined their skills through generations. Its silk products, especially those of muga silk, are highly prized both within India and in the world.

The roots of silk weaving as a trade in Sualkuchi date back to the 11th century, initiated during the reign of King Dharmapala of the Pala dynasty. Over the years, the town has evolved into an integral part of Assam's cultural and economic landscape.

This recognition by the Tourism Ministry acknowledges Sualkuchi’s importance not only as a centre of craftsmanship but also as a tourist destination exhibiting Assam's 1000-year old silk heritage.
