A Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of West Division reportedly remarked that the sighting of this rare and endangered bird is a sign of increased awareness about bird conservation over the years.

He also reaffirmed the department’s commitment to safeguard these migratory birds by working in tandem with the locals, thereby ensuring the former’s protection for future seasons.

Meanwhile, Doiheng has also witnessed the presence of the tiger bittern, as its gaonburha has reportedly appealed to the local community to not harm any of the visiting migratory birds.

Occurring between September and November, the migratory event in Jatinga sees birds such as Indian pittas, kingfishers, common moorhens, drongos, and green pigeons flock to the region every year under unique weather conditions.

Despite a decline in the number of visiting birds due to recent environmental changes, the enthusiasm among bird lovers remains high. Plans are currently underway to establish a birdwatching tower at Doiheng, which could turn the village into a major tourist attraction.
