GUWAHATI: A disturbing incident of harassment and intimidation has recently been reported by Askar Ali, a student at Tezpur University. Ali alleges that he and a female classmate were subjected to vulgar gestures, obscene comments, and threats of rape and murder by a group of intoxicated individuals near the university's main gate.

When Ali intervened to protect his classmate, the group turned on him, making further threats against his life. Despite reporting the incident to university security and the local police, Ali claims that no immediate action was taken. The harassment escalated, and Ali was later blocked by the group, photographed, and threatened again. Local residents reportedly intervened, confronting the alleged harassers.
Ali further alleges that when he attempted to file a formal police complaint, he was advised to resolve the matter informally. The alleged harassers then filed a false First Information Report (FIR) against Ali, demanding money to withdraw the complaint.
Ali's statement highlights a pattern of similar incidents, with many students remaining silent due to fear and a perceived lack of support. He called for improved security measures on campus, including the establishment of emergency help kiosks near the main gate, increased police patrols during late hours, and expanded CCTV coverage at all gates.
Talking to G Plus, a senior official from Tezpur University said, “The incident took place outside the university premises. Since most officials are currently on vacation, not everyone is fully aware of the details. If this had happened on campus, we would have been in a position to assist or have clearer information about it.”
