Tamil Nadu Replaces Rupee Symbol With Tamil Script In Budget Logo

GUWAHATI: The Tamil Nadu government, led by MK Stalin, has replaced the rupee symbol "₹" with the Tamil script "ரூ" in the logo for the state's 2025-26 budget. The move has reignited the ongoing language debate between the BJP-led central government and the DMK-led Tamil Nadu administration, which have been at odds over the National Education Policy's (NEP) three-language formula.

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu is set to present the 2025-26 budget on Friday. The redesigned budget logo prominently features "ரூ" (ru), the first letter of the Tamil word "Rubaai," which represents the Indian currency in the Tamil language.

The decision has drawn strong reactions, particularly in the backdrop of Tamil Nadu’s continued resistance to what it perceives as the Centre’s efforts to impose Hindi on non-Hindi-speaking states. The DMK government has repeatedly accused the central leadership of attempting to undermine regional languages, particularly in the southern states.

Earlier, CM MK Stalin had strongly criticised the BJP-led government, arguing that the push for Hindi threatens the linguistic diversity of the country, including within North India.
