GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the names of Shamima Jahan, Advocate, and Yarenjungla Longkumer, Judicial Officer, for appointment as Judges of the Gauhati High Court.
This recommendation follows a meticulous evaluation process initiated on 29 May 2023, when the Collegium of the High Court proposed the candidates.
The scrutiny and evaluation by the Supreme Court Collegium took place on 17 October 2023, where further consideration was deferred pending a report from the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court. The Chief Justice, in consultation with members of the High Court Collegium, forwarded the minutes of the Collegium regarding the candidates' suitability on 19 October 2023 and 7 November 2023.
Under the Memorandum of Procedure, Judges of the Supreme Court well-versed in the affairs of the Gauhati High Court were consulted to assess the fitness and suitability of Shamima Jahan and Yarenjungla Longkumer.
After careful consideration and taking into account the opinions of consultee colleagues, the Collegium is now convinced that both candidates are eminently suitable for appointment as Judges of the Gauhati High Court.
In a resolution signed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the Collegium officially recommends the appointment of Shamima Jahan, Advocate, and Yarenjungla Longkumer, Judicial Officer, as Judges of the Gauhati High Court.
