GUWAHATI: The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear a batch of pleas seeking to challenge the constitutional validity of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) today.
A bench, comprising Chief Justice SA Bobde and Justices S Abdul Nazeer and Sanjiv Khanna, which had issued notice to the Centre on various pleas, is likely to hear over 140 petitions, including those filed by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Congress leader Jairam Ramesh.
It is to be mentioned that President Ram Nath Kovind gave assent to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 on December 12, turning it into an Act.
Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a public rally in Lucknow said the government won’t step back on the contentious legislation.
Addressing the rally Shah said, “I want to say it again that the government is not going back on the CAA. Those who want to protest may continue doing so.”
“Let it be very loud and clear to our opponents that the citizenship law won't be rolled back at any cost, irrespective of the protests,” Shah said of the amended law.
Meanwhile, BJP chief JP Nadda will be in Agra on January 23 to garner support for the recently amendment act while Defence minister Rajnath Singh and Union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari will be also hold rallies in UP.
