A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala on Monday, September 23, urged the central government to form an Expert Committee to design a national programme for sex education. Its aim should center around closing the knowledge gap and promoting informed attitudes toward sexual health and consent.

The court emphasised that widespread misconceptions and social stigma surrounding sex education prevent open discussions about sexual health, especially among parents and educators.

The Bench also addressed the misconception that sex education is a Western concept misaligned with Indian values, noting resistance from some state governments. This opposition, the court said, drives youth to unreliable internet sources, leading to distorted perceptions and unhealthy behaviours.

The court finally highlighted the Udaan programme in Jharkhand as a successful model, stressing that sex education covers critical topics like consent, gender equality, and healthy relationships, which are essential to reducing sexual violence and fostering respect for others.
